What is a Pack?
A pack is a group of Cub Scouts, adult leaders and parents who belong to the same Cub Scout Unit (e.g. Pack 901 Pack 901 of the Hunterdon Arrowhead District, Central Jersey Council). A pack generally draws its membership primarily from an elementary school or church that is associated with the pack's Charter Organization, but any boy interested in scouting can join the pack. The Charter Organization for both packs is The Immaculate Conception Church. Each pack is made up of Tiger Cubs, Wolf, Bear and Webelos dens. The pack has a monthly meeting where all the dens come together. Earned awards are handed out, songs are sung, skits are performed and occasionally guest speakers are invited.
What is a Chartered Organization?
A Chartered Organization is the sponsoring organization for a Cub Scout pack, usually a church, PTA, homeowners' association or other community group. The primary responsibilities of the Chartered Organization are to select the leadership of the pack and provide a meeting place. Each year, the pack must renew its charter with its local council. The Chartered Organization must approve the rechartering application in order for the Charter to be renewed.
What is a Den?
A den is a small group of boys (ideally 8-10) of the same grade level. Each den meets on a weekly or biweekly basis to work on achievements and other activities. The den is lead by two adult Den Leaders who are responsible for planning and conducting each den meeting. Parents are asked to assist at den meetings on a rotating basis.
Where and When are Pack Meetings Held?
Pack meetings are held monthly. Pack 901 meets on the third Thursday of each month at 7:00 PM (SHARP) at Patrick McGaheran All Purpose Room. There are some exceptions due to evening school activities, so everyone is provided with a pack calendar that outlines all of the pack meetings and special events. Your Den Leaders will provide you with a schedule of den meetings, field trips and special den events.
What are Pack Meetings Like?
Each pack meeting is planned around a theme such as "Be a Detective", "Imagine that!" or "Do a Good Turn". Pack meetings include the flag ceremony (openings & closings), and may include songs, skits, games, advancements, adult recognition, Good Turn projects, the Cubmaster's messages & announcements, and guest speakers. All Cub Scouts and at least one parent are expected to attend. All other family members are welcome but we ask that parents maintain control over their children and remain quiet during certain parts of the ceremonies. Signs up (first two fingers on right hand) means QUIET IMMEDIATELY and we ask Cub Scouts, parents and siblings to adhere to the rules of conduct set forth by the pack.
Who Runs the Pack?
The pack is run entirely by unpaid volunteers. Parents just like yourself who are dedicated to the values of Scouting and who want to show the boys how to have fun, learn new skills, practice good citizenship, and adhere to the purpose and values of Scouting as outlined by the Boy Scouts of America.
The Pack Committee, which currently consists of the committee Chairman, Cubmaster, Assistant Cubmaster, Tiger Cub Coordinator and the Treasurer, develops budgets, approve expenses, arrange for facilities and conduct overall planning. The Committee meets monthly after each Den Leaders meeting or as the need arises.
The Den Leaders are most directly involved with the Cub Scout Dens and generally meet weekly or biweekly. Den Leader meetings are held monthly to discuss issues of common concern and upcoming pack and council events.
An adult member of each Cub Scout household is expected to participate in a volunteer position or serve on a committee during the Scouting year. A description of these positions can be found in the family talent search sheets.
